Wanderers keep foot on the pedal

Tony-PopovicComplacency is a no-no at Western Sydney Wanderers, insists coach Tony Popovic.

The A-League debutants pulled off two remarkable feats with Saturday night's 1-0 win over Central Coast Mariners. It was the Wanderers' eighth straight victory, and put them on top of the table for the first time. Having worked so hard to get to the summit, though, Popovic is not about to let his players rest on their laurels. To that end, Wellington Phoenix's surprise 1-0 win over Melbourne Heart in Dunedin on Sunday may have helped.
The Wanderers host the New Zealand side at Parramatta Stadium on Sunday, in a top-versus-bottom clash. All the pundits will be predicting Popovic's side secure a ninth consecutive win, but the Phoenix showed they are not willing to write off their season as they produced a quality performance against the Heart.
''Eight wins in a row shows they're not complacent,'' Popovic said of his players. ''They certainly won't be this week. That doesn't guarantee a result for us against Wellington but I can guarantee you they will be well prepared.''
The win against the Mariners was Western Sydney's 15th of the campaign, and another clean sheet meant they have conceded just 18 goals in their 23 games - the fewest in the competition. Popovic's side moved two points clear of Central Coast at the top of the table after substitute Labinot Haliti scored a late winner.
Popovic said: ''You can't take anything away from [Central Coast]. They're a great side, and we can't relax at all because if we don't get the results at the end of the year, I'm sure they'll be above us."
Western Sydney are 1.36 to beat Wellington Phoenix, who are 8.50. The Wanderers are 6.50 to win 1-0.
