Herbert not giving up on top six
Struggling Wellington Phoenix can still make the Finals Series, insists coach Ricki Herbert.
The New Zealanders are stuck to the bottom of the A-League table, after losing 2-0 to Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.
There are only six weeks remaining of the regular season, but Herbert is not about to dismiss his side's chances of climbing into the top six.
Herbert, who doubles as coach of the All Whites, has led Wellington into the Finals Series in both the past two seasons.
He admits it is a tough challenge, with the Phoenix sitting six points behind sixth-place Newcastle Jets, but insists it is still possible.
"I guess you're never going to rule yourself out until it's over. And it's not," he said.
"We're the side now that can be desperate, as we need to be, and be the side that can make it tough for teams around us."
Phoenix have a number of six-pointers left this season, against Finals Series rivals including Perth Glory, Newcastle Jets and Melbourne Heart.
"They'll probably fear playing us more than some of the other sides at the moment," said Herbert.
Sunday's defeat to the Roar was on the cards once Besart Berisha scored the second goal early in the second period.
It was a better performance than they managed in the last round, when they were crushed 5-0 by Central Coast, but there were still too many individual errors.
Dani Sanchez was at fault for the second goal, when he gave the ball away to Luke Brattan, but Herbert felt his side had also wasted too many chances in front of goal.
Wellington Phoenix are 2.37 to beat Adelaide United, who are 2.87.
