Weary Watson to take a break
British number one Heather Watson has decided to take a break from tennis after suffering a morale-sapping first-round defeat at the Miami Masters.
Watson held a 6-1 4-1 lead over Ayumi Morita, but was unable to close out the match and eventually went down 1-6 7-5 6-4, leaving the 20-year-old to target a much-needed rest.
Watson, who also lost in the first round in Indian Wells, told BBC Radio 5live: "This year I've been going a bit too long, so I'm a bit burnt out.
"I've been thinking about it now for a while and I'm going to take a break."
Of her failure to see off Morita and progress to round two, Watson added: "It really hurts. I think I just need to find myself, find my game again.
"I was playing really well, probably the best I've played this year and I think I lost my concentration a bit."
British hopes in the women's draw in Miami now rest with Laura Robson, who takes on Italian Camila Giorgi in round one.
The pair have never met before, with Robson 1.18 to reach round two and 1.57 to win in straight sets, while world number 85 Giorgi is 4.50 to upset the 43rd ranked Robson.
In the men's draw Andy Murray is 4.00 to triumph in Miami for the second time, having previously captured the title in 2009, while he lost in the final 12 months ago to Novak Djokovic.
