Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Manchester United have made a formal bid for Robin van Persie, which was turned down by Arsenal.
The Dutch striker will not be renewing his deal with the Gunners and has attracted interest from United, Manchester City and Juventus, who have spoken of their desire to pair him with Liverpool's Luis Suarez.
However, it is believed none of the enquiries made by the clubs match Arsenal's valuation of the player, who scored 41 goals in 53 games for the Gunners and Holland last season.
"Obviously Arsenal have given out the fact that we've made a bid for him," Ferguson told MUTV.
"We try to keep business as close as possible to us until the moment we conclude a deal. There's no point talking about something that might not happen.
"There are other clubs interested in the player. We've shown an interest and that's where we're at at the moment."
Arsenal will set off on their pre-season tour of Asia on Saturday, with Van Persie due to stay in London as he builds up his fitness.
Arsene Wenger's side are 1.61 to finish in the top four of the Premier League next season, while Liverpool are at 3.25 and Tottenham are at 2.75.
