Forget systems with online roulette

One thing that online casinos have changed immeasurably is the opportunities available for all people to play casino games. It used to be the preserve of the minority – those people who could physically get to a casino, but now you can play at any time of the day or night, for a five minute break or for a ten-hour session.

One of the first games people often try at online casinos is roulette and this may be because it’s one of the most iconic casino games. You’ll often hear reference to using a system to beat roulette, but the truth is that no mathematical system can be used to beat the roulette wheel, especially now that the game is online and the numbers are generated through random number generator software. If you’re going to partake in live roulette betting at and enjoy it, it’s vital that you accept that you are just as likely to lose a bet on the spin of the wheel as you are to win one.

Nonetheless, there are some supposed systems that many players swear by. One such system is the Martingale system, where you double your bet every time you lose on a spin. The logic behind this system is that you will eventually win back previous losses and recoup a profit that will equal the value of the original bet placed. Although this may sound OK in theory, the reality is that the Martingale system will be more likely to lead you to financial ruin.

A roulette playing legend thought to use the Martingale system was one Charles Wells, also known as ‘the man who broke the bank at Monte Carlo’. Wells played roulette in Monte Carlo in 1891 and during an 11 hour session won a million francs at the roulette table, including winning 23 consecutive spins at one stage. However, Wells said in later life that he had never used a system; he put his success down to dumb luck.

The tale didn’t end positively for Wells though. Although he returned to Monte Carlo and broke the bank again, he also ended up in prison for fraud for eight years and died in poverty.

When you’re placing bets on a roulette wheel, at a land-based casino or online, just bear in mind that this is a game of chance, and keep your stakes at a level that you can afford to win or lose!
